Indian Arts and Crafts Board; Taylor, Emma Squirrel, 1920-2002; photograph; These three decorated white oak baskets were made by Emma Squirrel Taylor (1920-2002), a master Cherokee basket weaver. Taylor was from the Birdtown community of Cherokee, North Carolina and specialized in white oak baskets. This trio of baskets was being assembled and photographed for a 1975 exhibition held at Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual in Cherokee, North Carolina. This photograph, taken by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, is pictured as the cover of the exhibition brochure, "Basketry by Emma Taylor".

Indian Arts and Crafts Board; Taylor, Emma Squirrel, 1920-2002; photograph; This white oak basket by Emma Squirrel Taylor (1920-2002) was photographed by Indian Arts and Crafts Board. Taylor was a master Cherokee basket weaver from the Birdtown community in Cherokee, North Carolina who specialized in making white oak baskets. This large storage basket was dyed with walnut root to create the dark stripes that run up the sides of the basket. The basket measures 14" by 13" in diameter. The exact date of this photograph is unknown, but the basket was made in 1982 and is also shown in QACM_Taylor_Emma_12.

The basket's date is unknown. Its base is slightly rectangular and tapers to a circular top. The white oak splits were not dyed leaving the basket its natural color. Emma Squirrel Taylor (1920-2002) was a master basket weaver whose specialty was white oak baskets. She was raised in the Birdtown community on the Qualla Boundary, lands owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. She learned how to make baskets in 1927 and produced them for more than half a century. In 1952 Taylor joined Qualla Arts and Craft Mutual, a Cherokee artisan cooperative.

With a handle and flat back, the basket is meant to hang on a wall and used to store small items. Taylor’s basket is dyed with walnut and bloodroot to achieve the brown and orange colors that are woven into the basket. With such fine decoration, the basket was mostly made for sale or exhibition. Emma Squirrel Taylor (1920-2002) was a master Cherokee basket weaver whose specialty was white oak baskets. She was raised in the Birdtown community on the Qualla Boundary, lands owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. She learned how to make baskets in 1927 and produced them for more than half a century. In 1952 Taylor joined Qualla Arts and Craft Mutual, a Cherokee artisan cooperative.
