After a friend brought Hawkins a napkin ring carved at the John C. Campbell Folk School, she began to carve herself. Hawkins sold her work through the Folk School's woodcarving cooperative that became known as the Brasstown Carvers. She sold $37 worth of carvings in through the woodcarving cooperative in1942. Hawkins recalled that she carved everyday starting "just after the break of morning light." Christmas figures and children were her specialty. |
