DescriptionThis map of Penland School of Handicrafts (now Penland School of Crafts) is one of a number of campus maps that have been printed over the years. They have served to promote the school, orient visitors, students and instructors, and to entertain the reader. With the passage of time they have become valuable documents that help to date the placement and construction of buildings, the changing topography of the land; as well as providing cultural information about the greater Penland community. This particular map was printed for use as a placemat in the dining hall. Students and instructors were encouraged to use the mat as stationery by folding it in half, writing on one of the blank halves, folding again, and then sealing, stamping and addressing. Though, not signed, it is believed that this map was drawn by Howard C. "Toni" Ford.
