| Description | This undated photograph by an unknown photographer is of Cherokee basket weaver Edmund Youngbird (1922-1995) with one of his woven rivercane wall hangings. Youngbird was unusual, as basketmaking is traditionally the sphere of women in Cherokee culture. Youngbird was known to be highly skilled and specialized in making baskets from rivercane. Born in 1922, Youngbird learned to weave rivercane baskets from his grandmother, Lizzie "Nannie" Youngbird. |
