DescriptionThis signed photograph of Frances Goodrich was taken by Doris Ulmann in 1934. Goodrich came to rural North Carolina in 1892 as a social worker for the Presbyterian Church. She was inspired to found Allanstand Cottage Industries in 1896, as a means to preserve traditional mountain crafts while providing needed income for rural families. In 1931, Goodrich transferred ownership of the Allanstand business to the newly formed Southern Mountain Handicraft Guild. A handwoven coverlet provides a fitting backdrop.
