DescriptionThis photograph of William Julius Martin carving small animals was taken by Doris Ulmann in the summer of 1933. Martin, also known as W. J. Martin or "Preacher" Martin, was a farmer in Brasstown, N.C. who supplemented his income with woodcarving prior to the founding of the John C. Campbell Folk School and the Brasstown Carvers. According to John Jacob Niles, Martin was one of the finest carvers in Martin's Creek community and in 1932 made his entire cash income from carving. Martin was married to weaver and spinner Mary Ricks Martin, also known as "Granny" Martin; their granddaughter-in-law, Murrial Martin, served as a woodcarving instructor at the Folk School.
