DescriptionThis photograph of Clara Maude Cobb Hilton (1885-1969) was taken by Doris Ulmann around 1933 or 1934. Hilton pottery was a family pottery which made functional pottery starting just after the Civil War. The pottery, originally located in Catawba County, moved to McDowell County in 1934. Clara Hilton took over the pottery after her husband's death, adding a line of decorative work and figurines for which she became known. Subsequent generations of this extended family continue to run potteries throughout the region.
