. He was
born
in the
Piney
Grove
section
of the
Qualla
Boundary
.
Like
his
parents
, he
spoke
only
Cherokee
,
learning
English
later
in
life
.
While
still
a
young
man
, he
started
carving
, at
first
using
a
kitchen
knife
and
later
a
pocketknife
. He
taught
his
younger
brother
,
Goingback
Chiltoskie/Chiltoskey
to
carve
.
Later
,
Goingback
gave
Watty
a
set
of
woodcarving
tools
.
Using
these
tools
,
Watty
Chiltoskie
carved
a
number
of
forms
.
Horsehead
bookends
were his
most
popular
. In
some
records
,
Chiltoskie's
last
name
is
also
spelled
"
Chiltosky
" or "
Chiltoskey
".
