Amanda
Crowe
(1928-2004)
working
on a
carving
of a
dancing
bear
.
Born
and
raised
on the
Qualla
Boundary
in
Cherokee
,
North
Carolina
,
Crowe
started
drawing
and
carving
at the
age
of
four
and
later
earned
a
scholarship
to
study
a the
Art
Institute
of
Chicago
,
where
she
received
a
Bachelor's
degree
and a
Master
of
Fine
Arts
degree
.
After
twelve
years
away
from
home
,
Crowe
was
invited
back
to
Qualla
by the
Cherokee
Historical
Association
to
teach
art
and
wood
carving
at
Cherokee
High
School
. She
accepted
the
position
and
taught
over
2,000
Cherokee
students
over
the
course
of
almost
40
years
.
