tray
basket
in the
permanent
collection
of
Qualla
Arts
and
Crafts
Mutual
. The
tray
was a
common
basket
form
among
the
Cherokee
.
Trays
were
traditionally
used
for
gaming
or to
serve
food
. In this
tray
, the
honeysuckle
was
woven
over
wide
white
oak
splints
. The
rim
appears
to be
honeysuckle
wrapped
with
white
oak
as
well
. The
honeysuckle
appears
to be
dyed
with
bloodroot
to
yield
a
pale
orange
bands
that
run
up
the
sides
of the
basket
.
Bloodroot
,
used
by
Cherokee
basket
weavers
to
make
dye
,
is
a
plant
native
to the
region
. The
date
of this
basket
is
unknown
.
