at a

Board
, a
division
of the
United
States
Department
of
Interior
. The
basket
was
dyed
using

and
walnut
root
.
Although
she was
skilled
in the
art
of
rivercane
basketry
,
Agnes
Lossie
Welch
(1925-1997)
was
known
for

learned
to
make

taught
Welch
to
weave
traditional

later
,
Welch
learned
to
make
white
oak
baskets
from her

.
White
oak
basketry
became
her
specialty
.
Burden
baskets
,
like
these, were
carried
on the
back
. They were
often
supported
by a
trumpline
that was
tied
around
the
wearer's
shoulders
or on the
forehead
and were
usually
made
of
white
oak
.
