This
cornhusk
doll
was
made
by
May
Ritchie
Deschamps
(1896-1982)
of
Swannanoa
,
North
Carolina
, ca.
late
1940s
. The
doll
wears
a
green
dress
with a
bow
tied
in the
back
. The
doll
has
fingers
and
is
carrying
a
piece
of
corn
shuck
(possibly
representing
a
broom)
. The
face
is
fading
and
is
in
fragile
condition
.
Deschamps
is
part
of the
Ritchie
family
of
cornhusk
doll-makers
,
whose
figures
are
characterized
by
several
unique
wrapping
techniques
that are not
used
in
other
cornhusk
traditions
.
