was
written
by
Mitchell
County

N.C
.
native
Emma
Conley
(Mrs
.
Grover
Conley)
who
taught
dyeing
and
spinning
for the
Penland
Weavers
and
Potters
and the
Penland
School
of
Handicrafts
(now
Penland
School
of
Crafts)
from
1935
to
1958
.
According
to the
introduction
,
Conley
learned
to
dye
wool
as a
child
, and "the
colors
and
formulas
in this
pamphlet
came
from those
early
experiences
and are the
ones
I
have
taught
at
Penland.
"
Meta
Lewis
assisted
Conley
with the
compilation
of the
recipes
and was
responsible
for the
revised
edition
that was
published
several
years
later
.
Conley
died
in
1959
.
