Description	This is a transcript of an interview of chairmaker Shadrach Birdic "Birdie" Mace, 1892-1973, conducted by Edward Dupuy and Clifford Hotchkiss in 1964. Mace lived in Madison County, North Carolina and came from a family of chairmakers. Mace and his family produced and sold chairs during the Craft Revival period. The interview takes place in Mace's workshop and he describes the various tools used during the interview including a froe and a draw knife. He talks about working with his father, Copeny Mace, and the difficulties of shipping chairs around the country. Dupuy's 1967 book "Artisans of the Appalachians" contains an essay on Mace that is based on this interview.
