This
woven
cloth
sample
notebook
was
originally
compiled
by
Helen
Wilmer
Stone
(ca
.
1891-1978)
presumably
while
she was
working
at the
Pine
Mountain
Settlement
School
in
Kentucky
. The
notebook
contains
samples
of
woven
fabrics
glued
to
notebook
pages
;
sometimes
the
samples
are
annotated
as to
type
of
fabric
,
dye
used
, and the
source
of the
weaver
or
county
in
Kentucky
. The
inscriptions
inside
the
front
cover
indicates
this
notebook
was
passed
from
Stone
, to
Clementine
Douglas
,
who
knew
Stone
from
Kentucky
and
who
opened
a
weaving
shop
called
the
Spinning
Wheel
in
Asheville
in
1926
.
Stone
published
several
articles
on
natural
dyes
and
dyeing
, as
well
as the "
Katherine
Pettit
Book
of
Vegetable
Dyes
"
prior
to
moving
to
Saluda
,
N.C
. in the
1920s
. She
moved
to
Saluda
,
N.C
. in the
1920s
and
married
,
changing
her
name
to
Wilmer
Stone
Viner
.
