XXXII, NO. 3 Thursday, September 22, 1966 CULLOWHEE, N. C. Three Students Die In Fatal Crash Homecoming Highlights Past And Present Koontz, Roberts, Helton Killed In High-Speed Accident The theme for this year's Homecoming, "Foundation of Future—Loyalty, Service, and Dreams," was set by the Student Senate at a meeting on Monday night, September 19. According to Bill Upchurch, Student Body President, the theme is built around the idea of honoring many of the retired and retiring faculty members, administrators, and staff of the college. The criteria for those honored will be set by the Homecoming Committee of the Student Senate, and the persons selected by the committee will be honored at the Homecoming ceremonies on Saturday, October 15. In a recent interview with Bill Upchurch, he had this to say concerning the theme for this year's Homecoming: "Since Homecoming is as much for the Alumni as for the present students, honoring these people might bring others back who might not otherwise come. Utilizing this theme, we hope to show them the new face, the capability, and the caliber of the students and administrators of this institution. "Here they will be able to see past dreams which are now reality, and see the potential which is here; potential which can be developed with their help. •This year's theme is flexible in that we can incorporate ideas not only from the past, but also from the present and future. "Floats and displays can hon or those persons who have made Western Carolina what it is today, or they can look forward to the time when the college will be raised to university status." Earlier Monday a committee met and laid the plans for the Homecoming festivities. The committee was comprised of faculty members and two student representatives—Bill Upchurch and Roger Euliss, chairman of the Student Senate Homecoming Committee. It was decided that the route for the parade will be the same as it was last year. The parade will form at the Camp Laboratory School, from there move past Reid Gymnasium, the post office and administration building to Hunter Library. Here it will turn left toward Memorial Stadium. At the tunnel entrance the Homecoming court and band will turn left, whereas the rest of the parade will turn to the right and enter onto the athletic field. Preceding the Homecoming festivities, a pep rally and bon fire will be held on Thursday night, October 13. There will be a dance on Friday night featuring Benny King, famous for his recording of "Stand by Me," "Seven Letters," "SpanishHall" and others. Letters have been sent out to all groups expressing an interest in having a display or float in the parade. The groups wishing to have an entry in the parade should send a representative to the Student Center Office sometime from 5-7 P.M. on Monday, September 26. Entries must be ready for judging by 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, October 15. The committee judging the entries will consist of two faculty members—Mr. Oliver and another chosen by him—and two students who will be appointed by the Student Body President. Saturday afternoon the crowning of the Homecoming Queen and presentation of her court will take place. iA concert featuring Si Zentner and his orchestra will be held at 3:00 P.m. Homecoming festivities will be climaxed later that night with a dance with Si Zentner and his orchestra. Memorial Stadium has been undergoing massive changes the past few months to prepare for the opening football game against the Appalachian Mountaineers this Saturday night To accomodate the overflow of students who have flocked to Cullowhee, additional seats have been added, giving the stadium a new look from what you saw last year. In addition to the new seats, a new system has been installed to help cut down the long, boring lines which the students had to put up with last year. Western students will still receive free admission to the games, but instead of reserved seat tickets there will be a student section which will seat approximately 2,700 students. Students will only be admitted by showing their LD. cards at the special student gate at the tunnel entrance to the football field beneath Stillwell building. Parents will not be allowed to sit in the special student section. If a student wants to sit with his parents he must buy a general admission ticket.
